Was wonderful catching up for dinner with an old friend after ages at this upscale Japanese restaurant that specializes in local dishes from Karuizawa in Nagano prefecture. Expect a lot of dishes to be laced with homemade Miso, Soy sauce & Vinegar. These seasonings can be bought from their online store. Suju is located on the 5th floor of Shin-Marunouchi building, across from Tokyo station, with a view of the Imperial palace, though honestly, I’d prefer a view of Tokyo station.
They have an extensive menu & are renowned for a large selection of sake & sochu. To my relief they had the menu in English. Instead of wading through the extensive menu we chose to go with the set meal (¥5000) which comprised of ~ Asssorted fresh vegetables served with 3 types of miso; Carpaccio of Amberjack; Baked potato topped with butter & miso flavored black beans; Grilled chicken marinated with homemade miso; Fried tofu cutlet topped with a special soy sauce; Marinated fried horse mackerel with vinegar dressing and finally Sweet & sour pork with vegetables, rice & miso soup.
The food was exquisitely presented in small morsels but they were packed with subtle & delicate flavors that complimented the Zenkōji sake (善光寺). The service was efficient & the ambiance was spacious & relaxing. The price could be a little steep if you don’t keep a check on downing those smooth sakes. A word of advice for those that have high pressure, please take a double dose of your meds or abstain from salt for a whole week, because the food could be a tad bit salty for you. Since I had said earlier, the dishes from Nagano use a lot of salt compared to the rest of the country. So, expect to taste miso in some form or the other. Don’t get me wrong, the food is nutritious, well balanced, delicious & definitely filling !
